.NET Compact Framework Programming with Visual Basic .NET

Published in May 2004 by Addison-Wesley as part of the Microsoft .NET Development Series. Available from both click and brick booksellers worldwide.

Paul Yao and Dave Durant started work on the first edition of these books in the fall of 2002. When they had enough of the book completed to release to the world, they posted these first draft chapters on this web site in November 2003.

And then what happened? Word got out that you could get access to some great technical information - for free! Over 2000 developers from around the world signed up, with over 24,000 chapter downloads.

Why did we do this? In exchange for sharing our work, we asked reviewers to tell us what we needed to do to improve the book. The result was hundreds of comments and suggestions from developers around the world - from Amsterdam to Zambia, with many comments from programmers in the U.S.A., but also suggestions from programmers in Singapore, Hong Kong, India, Canada, Brazil, Spain, France, Germany, and Switzerland. It was, in short, a worldwide effort to help us deliver a really great book to our worldwide base of readers.

In July 2004, we closed this review site. We thank the reviewers who downloaded the chapters and sent us comments, suggestions, and critiques. We also thank the readers who have purchased the book, and hope they have as much fun in building their embedded and mobile applications as we had in writing this book.

While the book review site is closed, preview chapters are still available at http://www.paulyao.com/cfbook. The source code for the book is available when you register at this location: http://www.paulyao.com/cfbook/code.  And finally, even though the review is closed, we welcome your comments for Paul or Dave at this email alias: bookreview@paulyao.com.

In 1986, Paul Yao and David Durant co-authored the first book on Windows Programming - back before anyone had an inkling that Windows would become what it is today. And now, these two pioneering technical wizards have teamed up again to help a new generation of programmers learn about an important new technology: the .NET Compact Framework.

Paul and Dave are simultaneously writing two Compact Framework books: one with all C# samples, the other with all VB samples. (The samples are going to be made available for download to registered users.) Prior to the publication, all chapters from both books will be made available on this website for public review and comment.

Why Have a Public Review?
"We were inspired by Bruce Eckel, who pioneered the idea of open reviews for programmer books," says Paul.  "Bruce has open reviews for all his most recent books. He says his readers give him feedback as he is writing to help him create better books."

Dave adds, "We are hoping our prospective readers will do the same for us. In exchange, Paul and I are working hard to make this the best book available on .NET Compact Framework programming. With the help of reviewers around the world, we feel confident we can achieve this ambitious goal."
