Pioneering Authors Team Up for Compact Framework Books

Bellevue, WA --Nov 8, 2002 -- The Paul Yao Company announced today their president, Paul Yao, was teaming up with David Durant of Durant Associates to co-author a pair of books on the .NET Compact Framework. Paul and David co-authored the first book on Windows programming, Programmers Guide to Windows, in 1987. That book became the classic text for programmers getting started with the then-new Windows 1.x.

The pair of expert programmers, writers, and teachers will produce two books: .NET Compact Framework Programming with C#, and .NET Compact Framework Programming with Visual Basic .NET. The books are geared towards programmers currently working on Windows CE and Pocket PC, as well as to programmers who are currently working with the .NET Framework on the desktop.

"Since working on the first book together, Dave and I have both spent all our professional life helping other programmers come up to speed on various Windows-based technologies," said Paul. "Our teaming up again was just natural, given that the Compact Framework is going to be such an important technology for the success of the Pocket PC and other Windows-CE powered devices.

"For the past serveral years Paul has been heavily involved with mobile device technologies while I have concentrated on desktop and web developement, being an early proponent of .Net. It just made sense to pair up again at the very moment that .Net developement is arriving on the mobile device doorstep." Says Dave.

The Compact Framework

The Compact Framework was announced by Microsoft in July of 2000 by Microsoft when it was making public the entire .NET initiative. The Compact Framework, which is currently in beta, is scheduled to ship with the next version of Visual Studio .NET, dubbed "Everett", which is scheduled to ship next year.

The Compact Framework brings to Pocket PC and Windows CE the same object-oriented API that programmers have enjoyed with the .NET Framework on desktop versions of Windows. Programmers will have their choice of two languages in the first version: C# and Visual Basic .NET, which is why the writing team decided to provide a separate book for each language.

"With their long-standing support for core Microsoft technologies, Paul and Dave are the perfect team to put together a book on the .NET Compact Framework," said Ed Kaim, Microsoft's Product Manager for the .NET Compact Framework. "The .NET Compact Framework will play a key role towards further integrating mobile and embedded devices - like the Pocket PC and Pocket PC Phone Edition - more fully into the new world of object-oriented and distributed .NET development."

Addison Wesley To Publish

The book is to be published by Addison Wesley, as part of their Microsoft .NET Development Series. "To really understand programming the .NET Compact Framework, you can't do any better than working through Paul Yao and Dave Durant's new book." Says Martin Heller, Series Editor.
